REMOVING SHINGLES IN GLEN MILLS
The first step in the repair process is to remove any old shingles from the roof. There are a few signs of aging or damaged shingles. They might be broken, curled, or missing altogether. Excessive asphalt granules in your gutters are also a sign that you might need a new roof. This is the first step we take in any roofing job and lets us get under the shingles and assess what needs to be done.
BEGINNING REPAIRS IN GLEN MILLS
There are several layers to a roof repair project. It’s not just a matter of removing old shingles and installing new ones. We have to assess the roof decking to see if there is any sort of water damage. In this case, we had to rip the plywood off as water damage had set in.
Asphalt shingles will last home for about 20 years. Towards the later years, it might end up getting worse. As your home’s first line of defense, your roof should be maintained regularly to prevent any sort of structural damage which can cost you way more than any roof repair could.
The roof decking wasn’t the only thing damaged as we also had to remove leak barriers and flashing.
NEW ROOF INSTALLATION
Once the damage had been treated, it was time to replace Steven’s roof and make it brand new. Certainteed is one of our favorite brands to work with because of its trustworthiness and reliability. For this project, we used their roofing paper and shingles to install Steven’s new roof.
We initially started with installing new roof decking that would go under the shingles. After that was done we installed the leak barriers which is like a roll of paper that prevents any water build up on the edge of your roof. Once the leak barrier and roof decking were installed we went ahead with the underlayment. This is basically another layer to protect your roof shingles from mixture buildup.
After this, we were almost at the last step. We installed new flashing which is a thin material that we use to direct water away from the important areas of your roof. For Steven’s roof, we installed the new flashing on his chimney.
The last step was to finally put in the new shingles. This went off very smoothly and Steven was thrilled about his new roof!
